You don't need perfect words. A few simple ones, said with care, can mean more than you know.

When someone we care about loses a person they love, many of us go quiet because we are afraid of saying the wrong thing. Silence can feel like distance. A few simple words, said with care, close that distance.

Say their name

If you knew the person who died, use their name. Many grieving people say the hardest part is that everyone else stops mentioning them.

Keep it short and true

  • "I'm so sorry. I'm here."
  • "I've been thinking about you and about them."
  • "You don't have to reply to this."

Offer one specific thing

"Let me know if you need anything" puts the work on them. Try "I'm dropping off dinner on Thursday" or "Can I walk the dog this week?"

Keep showing up

The cards stop after a few weeks, and the missing goes on for a long time. A short message a month later can mean the most of all.
